I like books to be just scary enough and this one fit that bill. BookBrowse seeks out and recommends the best in contemporary fiction and nonfictionâbooks that not only engage and entertain but also deepen our understanding of ourselves and the world around us. I was riveted by this unsettling book for about 3/4 of it, until an out-of-left-field conclusion left me both unsatisfied and not insignificantly confused. There are so very many selling points to The Sun Down Motel: two compelling, complex female protagonists, masterful plotting, a truly intriguing mystery… but the biggest selling point for me personally turned out to be the very thing I used to hate: this story’s supernatural elements. The Sun Down motel is a place where inexplicable things happen: doors open unexpectedly, cold spots appear without warning, and, every so often, a full-on apparition might be seen. The ghost story element of The Sun Down Motel is impeccably crafted, thoroughly entertaining, and bound to give you goosebumps.

Who called this group together? It was a creepy, out-of-the way place, but Carly surprised herself and took a job there on the same shift that her aunt worked. I’m a latecomer to St. James’ work, but in the relatively brief time I’ve been following her, she has transformed my reading habits. Danish crime writer Katrine Engberg broke onto the scene in the US in 2020 with her debut crime novel THE TENANT, the first in a new series about two Copenhagen-based police officers, Jeppe Kørner and Anette Werner. While I enjoyed her debut novel THE TENANT, I loved THE BUTTERFLY HOUSE, and would highly recommend this engaging, inventive Danish crime novel for fans of Nordic Noir and police procedurals.
